FRIDAY:

You may recognize the work of the Philly-based magical realist painter Katherine Fraser from the slideshow we ran upon the occasion of her last show; a lot of those images are still sticking with us, even as her new show, Alone Together, opens this week at Paradigm. What the new images we’ve seen tells us what we already knew: There’s more. Paradigm is currently scheduling socially-distanced visits of the show, and they’ve also been doing artist talks online here and there. Whichever way you check it out, you won’t be disappointed.

Catch Night 2 of The Philly Music Fest — this year, like all things, in your living room — with a pretty stellar lineup of Langhorne Slim, Mt. Joy, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Arthur Thomas & The Funkatorium, Arnetta Johnson & Sunny. It’s that last act that we’re most excited about, and even if you miss tonight’s show, check out Johnson’s 2019, “If You Hear A Trumpet, It’s Me” — it’s the weekend vibe you want.

SATURDAY:

In this real-time unfolding chaos, you can be forgiven for maybe forgetting that it is September in Philadelphia and there is a Fringe Festival going on: Let Nichole Canuso Dance Company’s Being/With: Home sink you back into those welcoming waters. Being/With has been adapted for a  Zoom experience with an audience of two — you, and another audience member, paired with the performers. Once you’re all in, what proceeds is a pretty unique experience of guided movement conversation between strangers. You could use all of that.

When was the last time you stayed in on a rainy day and READ ZINES? Today could be that day, friend. The excellent Maggot Brain has made their current issue available for free as a PDF and it has an article on the “The Philadelphia Wireman” that you will indeed want to check out.

SUNDAY:

Partly cloudy with a chance of a bike ride: We’ve been angling to try out this Go Philly Go app, which maps bike rides and walks around the city, or will just suggest some good ones if you feeling rolling the dice.

Lastly, bid farewell to summer with the brain-melting wave-rulin’ of this short surf documentary called “Soft Serve.”

To submit an event for consideration for Weekend Picks, email your stuff to tips[at]philebrity.com. And of course, in these times, please consult Philly Protests for up-to-the-minute and vetted actions going on around the city.
