Weekend Picks: Get To Know The People In Your Neighborhood
FRIDAY 3
First things first: Happy Pride Month! The Philadelphia Citizen has a massively thorough guide to both events and context for Pride in Philly this year that you’ll definitely want to have a look at before Pride-ing.
Also, a nice grip of (mostly local) shows in (mostly) delightfully out-of-the-way venues: There’s Vermont’s Moxie with Jeff Draco, Goodbye Again, and Wallace TN @ Ukie Club; Slowey & The Boats do their super relaxing modern-aloha music thing at Cianfrani Park, 8th & Fitzwater; Secret American / Stereo League (the latter of whom have a great new slinky-soul record out) play World Cafe Live; Birdie Busch plays at the Neon Museum as part of their City of Love: Artists Inspired By Philadelphia show.
It’s also First Friday: Check out Vox Populi for two big openings — Wild/Mild: Vox Populi’s 17th Annual Juried Exhibition and Best Practices: Vox Populi’s New Member Show! Likewise, there’s great last-chance sculpture show at Philadelphia Art Alliance.
Or perhaps you just want to hang in somebody’s yard eating a chopped cheese while good people play you their favorite records of all time: That’s be the Maas Garden Bar season kickoff.
SATURDAY 4
Get to know the people in your neighborhood: There’s a Record Fair in Fishtown; the Gold Star Park Craft N Flea; and the EPX Fundraiser Plant Swap & Sale @ BOK’s porch, where you can bring a plant, take a plant; be it bare root propagations, houseplants, seeds & starts, or garden plants.
But perhaps the most get-to-know-your-neighbor happening anywhere in the city will be at West Philly Porchfest, where there’s way too many porches and acts to name, but if you’re looking for a recommend, hell, go see Kuf Knotz, Rockers Galore, Mobbluz, Lola Kinks, Hank Hell + Shane SixTen.
Elsewhere: The Roots Picnic, as previously discussed; our esteemed editor spinning brunch at the Standard Tap; or, if you find all of this somehow lacking, try the free circus workshop with the Phila Schl of Circus Arts, Fringe Arts Haas Biergarten (registration required).
SUNDAY 5
You look exhausted. Try the Charcoal Chimney–Grilled Broccolini With XO Sauce Recipe. Listen to some archived recent Gilles Peterson shows on BBC6. Open the window and see if you can levitate.
