Weekend Picks: Disco Heaven
Fri 6/17
Belle & Sebastian are in town tonight at the Franklin Music Hall, and suffice it to say: We’ve got skin in the game. Likewise in terms of DNA-level indie imprinting, Guided By Voices are at the Ardmore Music Hall.
You’re gonna need a lot of disco to wash all that ‘90s off, so try this: Disco Heaven One Year Anniversary at Warehouse On Watts.
Sat 6/18
Neighborhood hangs in effect: Hit up the Port Richmond Library Flea Market; or the longstanding Northern Liberties Music Festival (acts to check out: A.M. Mills, Creem Circus, I Think Like Midnight, hell, the whole bill is great); annnnd Newbold Blues Festival, this year with crafters & makers as well. One does not think of Newbold as being an epicenter of blues music, but then again, at this point, the whole neighborhood is made up — why be a stickler?
Wanna get your steps in? The Passyunk E2E is a walk down Passyunk Avenue, end to end. From the event description:
SEE: Burly infrastructure, romantic junkyards, soaring bridge views, handsome, endangered (of course) historic industrial buildings, the Melrose Diner, rumbling semi-trucks, crumbling sidewalks, pocket parks, unidentifiable car fragments, all manner of siding and stainless steel frontages/stoops/curbs to rest upon as needed!
Elsewhere: Kraftwerk 3D at The Met; tUnE-yArDs at Union Transfer.
Sun 6/19
Happy Father’s Day to all who celebrate; wishing a day of self-actualization to all who do not.
More importantly, it’s Juneteenth! Events are happening all over the city, but here’s two of note: The Juneteenth Block Party with Talib Kweli at the African-American Museum, and Vinyl Tap 215 at Bartram’s Garden, with an extensive lineup of DJs and performers.
