On his own, or with Sun City Girls (the band he formed with his brother in 1979), Sir Richard Bishop enjoys a discography so extensive it’s frankly daunting. But what you need to know is this: As an avant-garde composer working in the style of what’s called American Primitive guitar music, he’s The Real Thing. So real that Bishop’s guitar work blows right by the more established notions of what American Primitive is most often taken for — there’s deep, deep raga in here, it almost crosses entirely into Eastern from Western, and just when you think he’s done that, he’ll flip a switch and turn into good ol’ Les Paul, snapping a lick just hear the reverb plate rattle.
