The Philly Lit Spelling Bee Will Be Nothing Short Of An Intellectual Death Match

Tomorrow night at Johnny Brenda's, the spelling acumen of some of our city's most well-read residents will be put to the test at The Philly Lit Spelling Bee. A fundraiser for The Head & the Hand Press, the event will pit teams from local literary outfits such as the Hatchery Reading Series, the Backyard Writers Workshop, and APIARY Magazine against each other in a survival of the intellectual fittest. Happily however, given the benefactorial purpose of the evening the contest will likely be more The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee than Bad Words. (Note to organizers, we recommend the following lit-related words be added to the competition: Turgenev and Slartibartfast). The winning team will earn bragging rights and a cash prize that further benefits their organization's goal. An after party with music from DJ DuiJI 13 will round off the evening. That coupled with the booze available at JB's could result in anyone not being able to spell their own name. Contestants, consider yourselves warned.

The Philly Lit Spelling Bee. Friday, May 13th. 8pm. Johnny Brenda's. $10
