All We Are Saying Is Give Rum A Chance

  • Southwark 701 South 4th Street Philadelphia, PA, 19147 United States (map)

Rum — good old dark rum — has gotten short shrift in the cocktail movement of the last decade, but perhaps, as the movement begins to wane, we can be thankful for that; it’s there to be discovered, mostly free of the handlebar moustache. But for those who’ve been paying attention, it’s got as much (if not more) going for it than the whiskey and gin that feel more boring and mansplainy with each new cocktail menu we see. (Fun secret: The best drinks at Hop Sing Laundromat are the aged rum ones, often with no more than one or two additional ingredients.)

Anyway, Wednesday is National Rum Day, a holiday whose essential meaninglessness is only rivaled by this event listing you’re reading right now. However, if you want to Give Rum A Chance (it’s all we are sayyyyyyyy-ing), do check out National Rum Day At Southwark. Since its reopening last year, Southwark quickly recaptured its status as one of Philly’s best, most deeply and quietly dignified bars and since then, has only improved on it. (The food is fantastic, too.) For National Rum Day, Southwark is ponying up $8 Appleton Rum Daquiris, but there will also be these rum-forward drinks on offer:

Honeysuckle- Honey, Lime

Pemberton - Cola syrup, Lime, Laphroaig 10

Stereo Instructions - Grilled peach Syrup, Fino Sherry, Lime

And speaking of Stereo Instructions, there’s guaranteed a good playlist always going here, too. Who knows, maybe they’ll even throw in the Sodomy and the Lash, too.
