First Tuesday of every month, Jamie Dillon aka DJ Bloodfaceman hauls armfuls of 45s to the downstairs of Johnny Brenda’s for an extended excursion on what his poster promises as “Jamaican Oldies.” This is objectively true, but it might also undersell the extent of Bloodfaceman’s digging, both of the crate and historical research varieties. On the Universal Cave podcast a few years ago, Dillon gave an introduction to reggae — and by extension Jamaican history — that was so solid, it ought to be taught in schools (and record stores, too). Philly doesn’t have a lot of reggae — DJs or bands — but what we have in DJ Bloodfaceman is something a lot of places don’t have: A reggae DJ who's got an ear as well as a genuine interest in the culture that’s nearly professorial.
