Proper spelling is what separates man from the animals, real news from fake, and everyone else from people who don’t know the difference between “you’re” and “your.” And in a world gone mad, perhaps one of the most civilizing things we could do is get ourselves in a room with some friends and some drinks and see who among us can best climb the mountain of all of those hard, hard words there are to spell out there. To this end, you are in luck: Local literary press and writing-facilitators The Head & The Hand are back with their annual spelling bee on Saturday night. And though it is a fundraiser for them, there is both honor and money on the line for everyone else, too. Ten local literary groups will compete for a stunning prize of 200 bucks, and there’s raffles as well for those in the crowd, who only wish they could spell “onomatopoeia.” Event sponsors Philadelphia Brewing Company will be on hand to most likely hinder your skills even further.
