"This Is My Wednesday Night R5 Ride And It Freaks Me Out!!!"

  • Bryn Mawr Film Institute 824 West Lancaster Avenue Bryn Mawr, PA, 19010 United States (map)

"Sparkle, Neely, sparkle!" Patty Duke chews the scenery and swallows "dolls" in all shades of the rainbow as Neely O'Hara, a talented performer corrupted by fame, booze, pills, and men, in this big-screen adaptation of the soapy bestseller from Jacqueline Susann. Other casualties of the cutthroat fame game include Barbara Perkins as an unlucky-in-love cosmetics spokeswoman and Sharon Tate as a busty actress reduced to skin flicks in this camp classic, featuring a haunting theme song (that plays twice!) by Dionne Warwick. Leave the dolls in the medicine cabinet and enjoy a (Sparkle, Neely!) Bellini provided by The Grog Grill. BMFI presents VALLEY OF THE DOLLS on Wednesday, June 28, 2017 at 7:00 pm. The pre-show Bellini reception, sponsored by The Grog Grill, begins at 6:00 pm. All ticket holders will receive one beverage with the price of admission. Tickets and details are available on BrynMawrFilm.org.

Now, my babies, is the time of the season when a golden-hour SEPTA regional rail ride out to, say, Bryn Mawr can approach the mystic — when that slow ride out into the sun-dappled Main Line can feel like a legit road trip, your edibles kicking in as you emerge onto Lancaster Ave. in balmy bliss. Whilst visiting the American suburbs — the true heart of our national depravity — might we suggest taking in the Bryn Mawr Film Institute’s Wednesday evening screening of Valley Of The Dolls. V O’The D, of course, is the camp classic that invented the genre of high camp chick-flick — “Sparkle, Neely, sparkle!” — but it’s always been more, much more. In that spirit, this screening also features bellinis. Procure your own dolls.

The immortal "Ronnie Z-Man Barzell" played by John LaZarr from Russ Meyer's great trash classic "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" written by Roger Ebert. This is one of many memorable lines from this movie.
