(Please note: If you wish to download this track, you can do that now at www.beautypill.bandcamp.com) This is a simple Beauty Pill theme commissioned by Hays & Ryan Holladay [then working under the band name Bluebrain], Spring of 2010, for an unusual interactive performance event. This piece was integrated into a larger work heard in a semi-aleatoric cassette boombox array held by many people on a guided walk through the cherry blossoms in bloom. You can read more about the project here: http://bit.ly/9Z4bwf Other collaborators in the work included Animal Collective, DJ Will Eastman, and Outputmessage. Ultimately the input was arranged as an expression of Hays & Ryan's vision. Individual instruments were assigned to different cassettes with a kind of organic surround-sound intent. By their nature, cassettes play at different speed, so a kind of "tectonic drift" was part of the feel of the event. Many onlookers mistook it as political protest, because it involved a large number of people "marching." Over a career that’s seen him alternately immersed in No Wave, alt-rock, legit bossa nova and more, Arto Lindsay has consistently followed what appears to be his own frankly kinda beautiful mellow-ness. Herein lies his greatness, because even when he’s messing around with the most dissonant forms, Lindsay’s work has a personability about it — as a songwriter, he’s one of the few around who so adeptly uses sound as a storytelling device. And as a narrator, he’s truly lovable, and all of it is well on display on his new LP, Cuidado Madame, the tour for which brings him to South Philly on Sunday night with the likewise gently-pushing Beauty Pill. Likewise born of punk roots, this D.C. group led Chad Clark has used the enterprising, forward-thinking nature of their home scene to arrive at an altogether more expansive place.
