On the whole, we’ll say this for living in the future: There’s so much more shoegaze than we thought there’d be. And some of the best — and we’ll go on record as saying some of the best ever — has been wrought by Philly’s own Michelle Zauner, whose records under the Japanese Breakfast moniker bring to the surface much of the original promise of shoegaze: To make wildly pretty noise-pop that has something truly subversive lurking beneath. Zauner’s videos since the release of the Psychopomp LP last year have made especially crisp work out of this, but it’s all over the album itself, which is a truly slow burn. This show on Friday at University of the Arts is billed as students-only, but if you can wriggle your way in, we’re thinking it could wind up being a truly memorable one.
