The Philly #IGers scene, much like most other metro areas around the globe, is filled with pretenders, but Jessica Kourkounis’s feed is the realest of deals. And frankly, to even talk about her work in terms of Instagram is perhaps to denigrate what’s really going on in her work, because Kourkounis is a capital-P Photojournalist whose photographs don’t just rub up against capital-A Art, but blur the line altogether. Consider this photo of Ivanka Trump, captured just yesterday, while on one of many assignments. (In this case, it’s for The Atlantic, but you will also find her regularly shooting for the NY Times or Getty Images.) Here’s Ivanka, in the eye of the storm, being human at a time that has proved utterly inhumane for women, plants, and other living things. Kourkounis has been on the election trail for the better part of the last year, but she’s also captured pop stars, human interest, and being a Philadelphian, any number of weird things on the street. It’s those last two that will most likely make up the bulk of her show at Trintiy Framing, which opens tonight. And these are the ones you’re going to want to take home with you. No offense to Ivanka.
