Now Playing: AM Mills, “Wreckin’ My World”

Since the disbanding of Blood Feathers a few years back, there’s been a quiet but ominous rumble from both Ben Dickey and AM Mills, the songwriting partnership that made up that band. In full disclosure, this would be a good place to hear it — somehow, this website got to release their Goodness Gracious LP, the high watermark of their twangin’, ramblin’ run. Dickey has continued to make music but has also taken up acting, starring in Ethan Hawke’s upcoming biopic of country outlaw Blaze Foley, while Mills has dug in even further to the almost noir-ish rockabilly crooner space he began to explore in Blood Feathers.

“Wreckin’ My World” is a fine example of that space, and there’s plenty of that space reverberating around inside of it. If, say, Full Moon Fever-era Petty was what was driving the Blood Feathers at one point, AM Mills’ current sound seems to be coming from the same desert plain where they cut Bob Dylan’s Time Out Of Mind. This sound permeates Mills’ Windowbox EP, but it also really comes through with his current live band, who’ve truly committed to this vibe — see them whenever you can. As for “Wreckin’ My World,” it’s got a gravitational pull in a carousel-type, lonely electric guitar chord progression and a heavy tale of old rain that suggests Mills is about to wander into something epic, and it ain’t LOLs.
