Endorsement: The Spinach Jawn and Marble Pound Cake At Batter & Crumbs Cafe
BY JILLY MacDOWELL | Our beloved "jawn" is being liberally applied to all manner of things lately, but in the case of a popular savory treat at Batter & Crumbs, it is appropriate. The savory spinach jawn is an unremarkable brownish square, irregularly pocked with tine marks (to release steam). It is not quite a bar, not really a pie; it is a jawn.
The erbazzone that inspired this vegan version is, true to Italian pastry, loaded with cheese. Baked in-house, this sort of flattened knish's addictively dank, vegetal filling captures cheese's tang & stickiness.
If you're looking instead for a sweet jawn, look no further than the front counter where gigantic marble pound cake slices, also baked in-house, are wisely stacked. Flavors are seasonal; right now blueberry is on deck. It bodes well for the vegan wedding cakes B&C also offers, quite stunningly.
Everything at Batter & Crumbs is vegan, including grab & go items from Tattooed Mom and Rowhouse Grocery. And they regularly donate a percentage of daily sales to local orgs like South Philly Community Fridge and Misfit Manor.
