The Last Emperor of Mexico, a One-Man Show At An Italian Market Butcher Shop

BY JARED BREY

When Europe began sending its people to the Americas hundreds of years ago, they weren’t sending their best. They brought disease. They brought destruction. They were rapists. And some, we assume, were good people.

Where did Maximilian I, chosen by Napoleon III to be emperor of Mexico in the 1860s, fall on that spectrum? Starting next week, local writer and performer Chris Davis will be exploring 19th century Mexican history with a one-man show called The Last Emperor of Mexico. The show will be staged at Los Amigos, a butcher shop at 9th and Montrose, in the Italian Market.

Davis is also the producer of the show One-Man Apocalypse Now. A writer concluded a recent review of that production with a question: “Is Davis a genius or a nut? I suspect the answer is ‘yes.’”

Starting on February 20th, the show will run for two weeks, Monday through Saturday, at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are available here.
