New Freedom Theatre Returns With The Urgent And Compelling "The Ballad Of Trayvon Martin"

The best theater mirrors society, reflecting upon us truths that often unpleasant to face directly. Whether or not audiences are up to the challenge of reliving one of the most difficult periods in contemporary American history and trying to find healing through art will be revealed when The Ballad of Trayvon Martin makes its world premiere at Broad Street's John E. Allen, Jr. Theatre on May 11th. Written by Rajendra Ramoon Maharaj (Little Rock) & Thomas J. Soto, the play is a dramatic retelling of the last seven hours of Martin's life that infuses elements of hip-hop and dance to comment on the tragic events of Februrary 26, 2012. Out of the devastating subject matter there is light to be found: This production from New Freedom Theatre, one of the nation's last remaining all African-American theater organizations, marks a rebirth for the troupe after a period of dormancy in which their future was in doubt -- making this staging feel all the more vital.

The Ballad of Trayvon Martin runs May 11th through May 22nd at the John E. Allen, Jr. Theatre. Tickets can be purchased here.
