The '90s were an interminable time that worked overtime to lay the foundation for the cultural quicksand that currently envelops us all. Even if you spent the decade idling away your youth with music, drugs, friends, and fun, the future is not something you can avoid by clicking your heels and saying "Snootchie Bootchies" until you find yourself back in your dorm, safely next to your CD of Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain. Philly comedy stalwarts The Incredible Shrinking Matt & Jacquie seem to understand this far too well, with their latest video being both a funny and way accurate takedown of VH1 I Love The... programs. The fact that it comes years after such programs have lost whatever relevance they may have had speaks volumes about the continuing negative impact of nostalgia, something writer Bruce Elliott once mused about in the book Retro Hell by stating "no longer fleeting and ephemeral, our memories are frozen on the screen, seemingly permanent" -- for who among us hasn't been tempted by living in our own personal reruns of a show we never should have watched in the first place?
